I am presently living in Brownsville, Texas and ministering in the colonias in Matamoros, Mexico. I have been in Brownsville since the fall of 1997 but more recently in the past three years have had the opportunity of working directly with and for the marginalized in Matamoros which is only 20 minutes from the U.S. border. I like to tell people that I’m not ministering with poor people but with people who are poor. At times it is very difficult for me because I am constantly faced with poverty and the consequences it has on others: malnutrition, poor health, no jobs, no potable water, electricity, roads, etc. However, the overwhelming feeling I have most days as I go to the colonia to be with “my people” is a tremendous sense of hope. Their faith, their ability to live each moment as it comes, and their hope that the future will be better not only for themselves but for their children is what gives me a tremendous sense of what life is all about and strengthens my faith. It is truly a transforming, changing, stretching experience for me but a ministry where every day I see Christ’s face in the people I work with and for. What do you enjoy in your free time? A passion I have… Is there a book or a movie that has had an impact on
your life? What would people be most surprised to learn about
you? Who is the one person that you would most like to meet? |
