I
grew up in Springfield, Illinois, the oldest of 10 children.
In 1966, at the age of 18, I entered the Ursulines. After completing
“basic training,” including college, my first ministry
was in high school, teaching chemistry and math. In 1981, I
finished a master’s degree in theology and then began
working in campus ministry and teaching theology. Since 1991
I have been serving in community leadership, and have been Provincial
since 2002. I live on the beautiful property where our provincialate
is located, in Crystal City, Missouri.
What do you enjoy in your free time?
Hiking, swimming, cooking, needlework and reading are among
the activities that I enjoy. Sometimes, too, I enjoy just “being.”
A passion I have…
Those who know me will testify that if I’m not indifferent
to something, I have a passion about it…so among the many
things I am passionate about, and very high in priority, is
the call of our international community issued in 2001 that
we live as Angela Merici, our foundress did, as women of peace
and reconciliation, in all our relationships.
Is there a book or a movie that has had an impact on
your life?
I love books, so there are many that I have enjoyed, and over
the years some of those have had an impact. However, the greatest
sources of “impact” in my live are other people—so
I’d say the movie “Gandhi” which gave me a
glimpse of his journey and of how to live non-violence would
be one of the influences on my life.
What would people be most surprised to learn about
you?
While I have a somewhat eclectic taste in music, when I’m
driving I usually tune to a country music station.
Who is the one person that you would most like to meet?
Of the people living today, the one I would most like to meet
is Nelson Mandela.
